Film Ideas - 2 Genres

                                Crime Film Extract - 'Dead'

                                 Drama Film - 'Seven'

This documentation process is evidence of some potential film ideas for my film production. I have completed the documentation in this manner because it helped me to visualise if one idea is more detailed than the other and the genre conventions that I have to consider as part of the film. It also allowed me to brainstorm all my ideas roughly into different categories, so that I didn't miss any significant factors of identifying my film idea. With regards to my final production, this will allow me to get the basics of my idea in place as I can later, expand my ideas in each of the categories. Whilst doing this, I realised that I prefer the genre of a teen drama as I feel I could make my film quite relatable. Therefore, within this task, I included the significant conventions of a teen drama in order to help me to develop my knowledge of this particular genre. Additionally, as part of this task, I had a formal discussion about my film ideas with my fellow peers in which they gave relevant advice and criticism, which helped me to finalise my rough ideas. Finally, compared to industry standard documentation of film ideas, it is conceivable that this documentation is in some way complex as for a rough plan, it contains significant detail which will furthermore impact my final production as it represents creativity.

Genre Conventions (pros and cons)

                                         Romantic Film
This is a documentation of the significant factors with Romantic Film.

Crime FilmI have completed my genre conventions in this manner because it helped me to visualise the significant factors included in these genres and therefore allow me to examine whether they would be relevant to chose for my film production. This will impact my final production as using a pros and cons list really helps to identify the main factors of a specific genre and therefore develop some of the knowledge I have on genre conventions. Compared to many industry standard documentations on genre conventions, I feel that mine may be a little simple due to the lack of explanation in my practice. However, the simplicity with the pros and cons list is immensely helpful as I can do further research after identifying the significant factors initially.

Budget Outline

I created a budget outline in which I identified all the financial factors of film production and did some research to find out the amount of the items that I will need and compared this price to the price that my film production will actually cost after permission to borrow filming equipment from my sixth form and self-funding for catering and transport. I've completed it in this manner because Exel helped to calculate the financial costs and the comparison between the prices is extremely clear. This documentation will impact my final production immensely as it could be argued that the budget is the most significant factor within film production as over the production process, I will keep coming back to the budget. Compared to industry standard budget documentations, I would say that my chart is smaller and simpler as there are some elements of pre-production that do not apply to me; my short film is not a large-scale production.

Pros and Cons of Financial Models

Before breaking down the budget, and identifying the potential factors I need to include in my pre-production work, I created a pros and cons table to visualise the possible options which I could use for my film production. I completed the Financial Model in this format because it helped to identify the clear factors of each way of getting this money. Additionally, it allows me to develop my understanding of the financial section of pre-production and therefore, improve my future work in film production and financial management.

Pre-Production (timing) Plan 4

I created a clearer timing plan, as a bar chart, to visualise the time that it will take to complete the pre-production.

However, I thought that the timing plan needed to be a lot more user friendly so that the tasks are visible in the graph. This way, I can see how long each category will take me and I can cross off each individual task after completed.

Pre-Production plan 3

I checked all the factors in my categories and, I realised that the budgeting category was in the wrong place as the budget is probably the most significant factor of pre-production; everything is limited because of it. Therefore, I moved the budget to the second task to complete after finalising a script. After checking all my ideas, I estimated how long each section of my pre-production would take, and came together with the timing plan above. I came to the conclusion that the whole process would take eleven weeks. I did this in this format because previously, with the sticky notes, it was so that I could keep changing my ideas until I was happy with it. So, this plan was to make everything permanent and allow me to take timing into consideration.

Pre-Production Plan 2

I used sticky notes, after discounting all my unneeded ideas, to visualise the groups that these factors would fit into. Previously, I completed research of the pre-production of films on different budgets and ideas. From this research, I have developed my knowledge of pre-production overall and came to the conclusion of the following categories:
  1. Finalising a shooting script.
  2. Storyboards and shot lists.
  3. Finding the right crew.
  4. Location scouting.
  5. Identifying a budget.
  6. Choosing the technology.
  7. Legal and ethical considerations.
  8. Rehearsal.
Compared to industry standard planning, I would say that again, this is just for me to really visualise the significant tasks involved in pre-production and therefore, is not at a high standard yet.
